The Musée du Louvre is the largest and probably the most important art museum in the world. It hads 35.000 works of art from prehistoric to the contemporary period. The museum holds many masterpieces like Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa (also known as La Gioconda), The Venus de Milo, and The Winged Victory of Samothrace (also called Nike of Samothrace). The Louvre Museum is located in the heart of Paris, between the right bank of the Seine and the Rue de Rivoli. The building was a royal fortress built by Philip Augustus in 1190. In the XVI Century a new Royale Palace was built on the site of the Louvre. In the course of centuries many changes have been made to the building. The last great renovation was completed in 1989, with the construction of the glass pyramid.
